WildCam Africa

Posted by @ 7:50 pm. Filed under webcams

“Embark on a quiet adventure and watch wildlife gather at Pete’s Pond in southern Africa. Baby baboons scurry in the dust. Wildebeests push and shove to make room at the watering hole. Warthogs wallow in the mud.”

It took the technical ingenuity of Cameron Murie, a little tinkering with satellite coordinates, some switching and routing of video data, and no small share of critterproofing to get live WildCam broadcasts from Pete’s Pond to your computer screen.

Pacific Walruses Streaming Live To You

Posted by @ 2:57 pm. Filed under webcams

Thanks to a remote camera croject at Walrus Island State Game Sanctuary on Round Island, Alaska, the Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) can be observed at home.

Scientists have installed two cameras at the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary off Alaska’s southwest coast. Web surfers and scientists have the chance to watch the mammals rest and play in their natural environment.

Web users see a live stream from the cameras set a quarter of a mile apart above the shore. The cameras look down on the rocky beach and catch the action of a half-dozen or more Pacific walruses in their everyday lives.
